Abstract
This paper discusses the current High School Football program and the debate to either keep it alive, or ban the program. The two differing groups are Cognoscenti, and The MMQB. Cognoscenti consider High School Football to be a high risk to the student’s education and safety. This group wants to see the football program banned from High Schools. The MMQB supports the thought that High School Football is too important to see get banned for all that it teaches the young kids, and for the huge value it has always been to our society. A head high school football coach in this group says:
“I am as aware of the concussion issue as anyone in our sport. In 2007, I was fortunate enough to receive the NFL-SCA National Coach of the Year Award at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. However, this group feels the few deaths and fatal injuries a year is not enough to completely remove football from High School, and the reasons why to the group are simple. With the right people to help guide the situation, and to make this sport safer, the group hopes to get rid of all the negative headlines and feelings for this sport they love. This group sees football as the last bastion of discipline, teaching kids traits desired by many professions, including the military. This group says that football teaches kids hustle, determination, teamwork, effort, discipline, intelligence, and that hard work pays off (Scurran, 2013). “If the high school football coach doesn’t teach this, who will?” (Scurran, 2013, 8). Toughness is a trait that goes along with football, hand in hand. The group says that toughness is valued in our society, when displayed in the proper venue. “Every family endures tough times, every business goes through tough cycles, and our country values toughness in its leaders” (Scurran, 2013, 12). The MMQB believes toughness along with multiple other traits are more important to these students than anything else. Their safety plays a huge role as well, which is something all football programs have been refocusing on to make the sport
