Is Pride Good Or Bad

Pride can be divided into two different categories, both good and bad. ‘Good pride’ is the feeling of self-respect and dignity one has within himself. It’s important for individuals to have this type of pride in order to gain confidence. A person shouldn’t go around feeling worthless or insecure, but they should be proud of their achievements. However, too much of a good thing can be bad. ‘Bad pride’ is the “deadly sin or superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance” (Maxwell). People use this type of pride to differentiate themselves among others, and is often times the root cause of all problems. Pride doesn’t cultivate out of the ordinary in a person’s heart. Instead, it is established through past life experiences. Wisdom, beauty, and …show more content…
In this modern age, we can see people that put too much important into their outward appearance. Some people spend thousands of dollars on beauty procedures, while others spend too much time in front of the mirror. For example, there are two types of people that go to the gym. The first set of people are the ones who go workout in order to live a healthy lifestyle. These people don’t go to the gym just to show off or to be the center of attention. They are able to develop ‘good pride’ because they have self-respect for themselves. The other set of people are the ones who go to the gym to look stronger and bigger than everyone else. These people can develop ‘bad pride’ and think that they’re better than others. Samson, in the Bible, was a man of great strength and charm. He was so strong that he was able to slaughter a lion with his bare hands. He was even able to defend himself against a thousand Philistines. His strength came from his hair, which God had warned him to never cut. However, that didn’t last long. Due to Samson’s good looks and great pride, a lot of women started to like him. He ended up falling for a girl named Delilah. Samson thought he was able to trust her to keep a secret. He told her his strength came from his hair, and that’s when she betrayed him. She went and told the Philistines. They then cut off all his long hair. Samson was never the same after that. He had lost all his strength, dignity, and …show more content…
They told me that pride leads to destruction and with humility comes great wisdom (Proverbs 18:12). Pride is a virtuous thing to have. However, when pride turns into arrogance, that’s when problems begin to arise. It was through pride that sin entered the world as Andrew Murray said in his book, “When the serpent breathed the poison of his pride, the desire to be as God, into the hearts of our first parents, that they too fell from their high estate into all the wretchedness in which man is now sunk” (Murray). Pride can come from many ways. People with too much wisdom, beauty, or riches can result to have a lot of pride within himself. Someone who has too much pride often finds fault in others. Fault-finding can lead to neglecting others and eventually becoming lonely. Loneliness is only one possible side effect to pride. Pride can also lead to greed. People might not be satisfied with what they already own, but they’ll have a longing to want more. In order to get those things, they’ll do whatever it takes even if it involves stealing, lying, or even
