Then one day, Jeremiah heard word that a woman named Harriet Tubman was helping slaves escape to Canada. He wrote letters to his friends saying, “I have found hope!”
One night after Jeremiah told his friends about Harriet Tubman and her plans to help enslaved adults and children to freedom, they tried to find her in the woods. As they walked on, Johnny whispered, “Look, everybody, I see someone!” The kids were not sure whether this lady was Harriet, but they went towards her anyway.
As the lady saw them walking closer, she asked, “What are you kids doing here?”
Jeremiah replied, “Excuse me, ma’am, but do you go by the name of Harriet Tubman?”
She hesitated and said, “Well, yes, yes, I do.”
The next night, Jeremiah and his friends were in the woods with their candles lit. “You sure Harriet’s coming back tonight?” Zack asked.
“She must!” Madeline replied.
When Harriet finally showed up, she whispered, “Are you guys ready?”
Madeline replied, “Ma’am, we have no family, what else are we missin’?”
Harriet responded, “All right then, let’s go!”
