Jewish Needs VS. Arab Claims by Vladimir Jabotinsky
The Zionist believed that the Jewish people could have their own nation. They followed the Basel program which took place in the Basel Municipal Casino on August 29, 1897. According to the Jewish Virtual Library a Project of AICE, the first Zionistic congress was enforced by Theodor Herzl. In this meeting they discussed the World Zionist Organization and the declaration for the Basel program. Zionist clearly stipulated in this meeting that they wanted a home for the Jewish people. They were planning on the appropriation of the lands in Eretz-Israel by Jews that were farmers, manufacturers, and artisans. Jabotinsky was also inspired by the Zionist Congress. His passion for the Zionist movement grew strong along his lifetime. While living in Odessa, his friend loaned him works of Herzl. He saw Herzl as a powerful figure in which he could relate to. While in Odessa, Jabotinsky experience his first pogrom in which he fought against. He used his writing to write a poem that raised awareness of the current situations in Odessa. Also, he wrote other books in which he talks about the Zionist movement and how it can help the Jews. Arab Claims was primarily directed to the British House of Lords. Representing the Zionist movement, Jabotinsky wrote this document to express his claims in favor of a Jewish nation that could benefit every other nation. His main persuasive tactic was that if every nation was against the Jews then they should provide them with a secluded home. Also, he goes into detail of whether or not it is important to keep the Arabs happy. According to Jabotinsky, “when the Arab claim is confronted with our Jewish demand to be saved, it is like the claims of appetite versus the claims of starvation” (MF p.692). Indeed his opinion is correct if the Jews weren’t planning of taking the land from whoever was there already, but that was not the case. However, within this whole discussion of who has the land of Israel, the Arabs tried to exterminate the Jewish population by going after them and killing them. In other words, if the Arabs would not have done that then they could have had bigger chances of gaining the land which in some places they got a few parcels of land. Jabotinsky also states that its “humanity’s duty to provide the Jews with an area where they could build up their own body social undisturbed by anyone.” What seems as an idealized statement came as a shock for the people around him.
