Job Corps Experience Essay

I attended Lake Clifton High School in Baltimore City from 2014. My high school was in the northeastern area of Baltimore City; I took a city bus to get there because I lived in west Baltimore. I chose to attend that school because my cousin and many of my friends were there. I fit right in and I felt comfortable because I knew many students. I only remained at Lake Clifton for two years because that high school was closed down by the Board of Education; the buildings were very old. After this happened, my mother discussed Job Corps and my older brother Tyquan told me about his positive Job Corps experience. Months later my mother enrolled me in Woodland Job Corps to complete my education and become more disciplined.

I was able to choose which career center to attend. I started Job Corps on April 12th, 2016. I decided to come to Woodland Job Corps in Laurel, Maryland because at this center only two students share a dormitory room. There was another Job Corps to choose, Woodstock Job Corps, but the center had four students

The students here at Woodland Job Corps Center are very nice, helpful and I enjoy many of the students’ company. After a couple weeks in the program I began to socialize with less students and staff because I found myself getting into minor disagreements. For the most part staff at Woodland are caring and provide students with the support needed to complete the program. I believe that it was God’s decision for me to attend Job Corps. Job Corps gave me the advantage to be a seventeen year old with a trade hospitality. Obtaining my trade in hotel and lodging makes me more employable than most teens in my age range. Also I will have my high school diploma before age eighteen. I never thought I would be seventeen years old with the accomplishments I have. Even though I haven’t started work base yet my goal is to complete the program in December of this

Job Corps provides at-risk youth with the opportunity to receive Youth Discretionary Grants, Apprenticeship, and Youth Formula-Funded Grant Programs. Youth Discretionary Grants are aimed at specific populations of at-risk youth, such as young offenders, youth living in high-poverty areas, and foster youth, while Apprenticeships are a combination of on-the-job training and related classroom instruction in which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation. Applicants for apprenticeship programs must be at least 16 years old and meet the program sponsor's qualifications, and Youth Formula-Funded Grant Programs provide services to eligible youth, ages 14-21, in local communities. “The magic happens when you step outside your comfort zone.” This proverb sums up everything I went through when I recently attended the Air Force Academy’s Summer Seminar in July. While there, I was pushed well beyond my limits. We, the attendees, did strenuous physical training sessions at roughly a mile above sea level, woke up before the sun rose, attended sample classes, and studied tons of military knowledge while learning about the Air Force Academy and the admission process. It was truly a challenge being there, and I loved every minute of it!…

Unlike other students in my class, the place where I did my service learning was a little bit different. What made it so different was that there was a lot more, at least I felt, elderly people as opposed to people with disabilities. Sure they may have been a few that if you went there you could maybe tell that they were disabled but honestly, after putting in so many years of visiting nursing homes with multiple groups, I couldn’t even tell if the younger people there were there for the program, or just hanging out with the elderly. As a side comment this could have been because one of the groups that I went with just happened to be a group of people with mental challenges, so that could have added to the confusion. Anyway, as I have said because of my past experiences I can’t really tell what’s what sometimes.…

I’ve had many positive experiences in my life, but my experience joining the Air Force and completing Basic Training had the greatest impact. I did not take high school seriously, because I signed to join the Air Force in my junior year of high school. Since I knew where I was going, I did not feel the need to apply myself in all my classes. I did just enough to graduate high school. Then September came, the month I left to Basic Military Training.…

At the beginning of the work experience I had worked at my job, Old Navy, for around 3 months and I was somewhat new and inexperienced to what my job required. Whenever, I needed help, other employees wouldn’t mind helping me out. There were a large number of people working there who were immigrants but no one was racist towards anyone. Everyone worked together and treated each other like a family so that helped me to be comfortable working with them. The workplace was always very clean, which also created a nice environment around me to focus on my work. That’s really a good thing because a nice working environment keeps me safe, healthy, and gives me more energy to do my work.…
