The son of two immigrants, John Philip Sousa was born in Washington D.C. on November 6, 1854. John was thee third of ten children and his parents’ names were Antonio Sousa and Maria Elizabeth. He began his musical journey on the orchestral violin and his dad also taught him a few other wind instruments. By the time he was six he was studying piano , voice, flute, cornet, trombone, baritone, alto horn, and violin Being that his father was in the marines, he secured John an apprenticeship in the Marine Corps band after adventurous young John tried to run away with the circus. Concluding World War I he continued his tours and received honorary degrees and challenged Congress on composers’ rights in 1928. He is so well-known after all his accomplishments that his nickname is “The March King.” Unfortunately on March 6, 1932, 77 year old Sousa was pronounced deceased in Reading, Pennsylvania from heart failure.
John Philip Sousa has gone down in history as the greatest marchers of all time. Certainly, I would think so after all his accomplishments as a conductor and a person. The time, effort, skill, blood, sweat and tears it takes to write 136 military marches, 10 operas, and conduct several bands while still raising a family just makes the man even more remarkable. And imagine what might of happened if he succeeded in running away with the
