Johnny is a panicky and sensitive boy. For example, when he stabs Bob, he panics after the incident and is afraid of the consequences that would happen because of the crime of murder. To escape from the consequences, he decides to run away with Ponyboy to an abandoned church, hoping that no one recognizes them from the descriptions in the newspapers. To help be unrecognized, they cut their hair short and bleach it, since Greasers are known for their long, greasy hair. Also, Johnny can be a selfless person; he puts other people before himself. When Johnny doesn’t hesitate to rescue the kids from the burning church is an example of this. Darry shows how sorry he is to Pony when he slaps him, even though he doesn’t reveal it at first. For example, after Darry slaps Ponyboy, he says “Ponyboy,” in a sad way, like he doesn’t mean to hurt Ponyboy. Although Ponyboy doesn’t realize it for a period of time, Darry is actually concerned about Ponyboy’s safety and education. In the book, Darry shows how worried he was by always trying to stop Ponyboy from doing anything dangerous or would get him in trouble. In the novel, Darry tries to talk Pony into not being a part of the rumble, because he lost a lot of weight and wasn’t in good shape due to his injuries from the church fire. Because of Ponyboy’s condition, Darry thinks that Pony wasn’t going to fight so well and get beaten up at the rumble. This shows how much Darry loves Ponyboy and doesn’t want to lose

Did you know that the movie for the outsiders is only roughly one hour and thirty minutes. Some might say that the movie the outsiders makes you have less sympathy for Johnny and Dally. I am saying this because in the book Dally sounds like he wanted to die more in the book. I am saying this because when it was written in the book even said he had a look of triumph in his eye, and in the movie, it seemed that he was scared and how he didn't want to die. Through the novel, ‘The Outsiders’, Hilton has proven her point in which all young people should have a sense of belonging. Ponyboy, the main character as well as a member of the Greaser gang and he believes that belonging to a gang is the reason to the safety of his friends and himself; he has someone to rely on. Johnny, Ponyboys best friend as well as another member of the Greaser gang, needed the urgent sense of belonging as he wasn’t overly supported by his own family and “he would have run away a million times if [the gang] hadn’t been there”. The absence of Johnny’s own family was replaced by the gang and it was as though he had family right there; the Greaser gang. By showing and elaborating the character Johnny, Hilton strongly displays how Ponyboy believes that belonging to a gang is not only important but also comforting.…

Ponyboy narrates at the beginning of the novel that Johnny is like a scared puppy and “pet” of the gang. Ponyboy illustrates, “If you can picture a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you'll have Johnny.” (Hinton 11).
