Kallikantzaroi Short Story

Half-human, half-animal, these monsters are black and hairy, with huge heads, glaring red eyes, and blood red tongues hanging from their mouths. They have monkey arms, long curved nails, beast feet, and goat ears. The Kallikantzaroi are tiny creatures that live in the depths of the Earth. Working all year round, they chop at a huge tree trunk that is the Earth's foundation. Right before finishing their job, Christmas Day comes and they surface on Earth for twelve days. During their visit they create destruction and play tricks on people. They hide from dawn till sunset and at night they run widely, pulling pranks and making messes. They enter people's houses through the chimney and door to make havoc of the home. The Kallikantzaroi are afraid …show more content…
I quickly grabbed one of my worn out running shoes that we could burn. Because I was in cross country and could run the fastest I offered to run out and grab the lighter. When I opened the door what laid before my eyes was a disaster. The creatures had overturned and broke all the furniture, devoured the leftover pork from dinner, and were in the middle of shattering the kitchen dishes. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me and quickly grabbed the red lighter my father had placed by the fireplace. I made it back to the room safe and was determined to get rid of these nasty unwanted guests.

The shoe caught flame and we opened the door so that the horrific smell of burning rubber would travel through the whole cottage. The Kallikantzaroi were disgusted by the smell and all four fled immediately back up the chimney where they came from. We were all relieved that they were gone but we had a huge mess to clean up. For the rest of the nine days we were on vacation we kept a fire going at night to prevent them from coming back. I focused on brushing this incident off because I wanted to have a fun time skiing in the snowy mountains. That was a winter vacation that I will never
