In 1998, rap had outsold country in sales. Country was America’s top selling format previously before hip hop took the fame (Farley). Hip hop sold beyond eighty-one million albums that year. Russell Simmons, co-founder of the Def Jam music label, stated, “Rock is old.” He also mentioned that rock is old people music and hip hop is for the creative people. Hip hop achieves creativity by providing poetry behind an appealing beat. In addition, several music genres may be tuneful, yet they probably do not attract others like hip hop does. However, hip hop has a background history with their own culture. Hip hop’s culture includes: rap, turntablism, b-boying, graffiti art and beatboxing. Hip hop escalated in fans over the past forty years due to the popularity in music and style in dancing. Also, although many fans may not be talented in turntablism, nonetheless, djing can be exceedingly enjoyable to them. Not to mention, this genre has several characteristics that can describe different types of artists. Multiple artists have their own vocal styles. Then again in the current generation, about each artist applies auto-tune to their voice. For instance, Snoop dogg stated, “When I came out as a rapper, everyone had their own style, now they all sound the same.” An additional feature that is important to hip hip is the lyrics. Rappers in the past would rap about their daily struggle they went through, while new rappers rap about how much money they make, the drugs they do, and other irrelevant situations. Although new rappers write horrible lyrics, the producers make creative beats that maintains the fans interest. One might say that the hip hop industry is over.
