Significant personal events in one’s life can act to influence an individual’s artmaking practice. This is evident through Frida Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ 1944, Jenny Sages ‘After Jack’ 2012 and Christian Thompson ‘King Billy’ 2010. Frida Kahlo, is the first example of such an individual as she experienced a horrible accident causing permanent damage to her spine. As a result of the accident, Kahlo became influenced to paint through using her emotion as a driving force to paint where Kahlo states “I am broken, but I am happy as long as I can paint”. This is depicted in Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ in plate 4 which depicts a figure namely Kahlo herself being pricked by nails with the presence of a broken pillar.…

In this essay I will discuss the ways that Vincent Van Gogh’s, The Night Cafe, 1888 was used as influence for Ernest Ludwig Kirchner’s, Street, Dresden, 1908. To prove my point I will provide visual analyzations of the pieces, some background to the artists and the art movements they were associated with, and events that happened around the time the paintings were created that affected many artists and the work they created. Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, Night Cafe, depicts a scene a cafe with four empty tables as well as three with people seated at them. There is a green pool table at the center of the room that casts a large orange shadow onto the yellow floor. There is a man with neon green hair in a yellow suit standing to the right of…

The TAG Art Gallery is located in a quaint 1700 square foot home on 214 King Street in downtown St. Catharines. During my visit to the TAG Art Gallery, I was greeted by one of the owners and operators of the gallery, Frank Goldspink. Frank guided me throughout the rooms of the gallery and provided an abundance of information on the history of the TAG Art Gallery, the various types of artworks that were included in their collection, and background information on the artists. Originally, the gallery was owned and operated by Tom and two other individuals who were interested in photography. A few years ago, the two individuals had decided to move onto different endeavours.…

Nijedka Akunyili Crosby’s mixed media exhibition Predecessors, being showcased at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati Ohio from July 15th to October 1st of this year, is composed of work completed in the past five years including pieces of the same name, Predecessors. These two pieces which make up Predecessors are composed of acrylic paint, colored pencil, charcoal and photo transfers on paper. Hanging side by side, the pieces both complement and contrast not only each other but also in and of themselves with the materials being used. The hybridization of materials creates both a sense of chaos – the contrast between the photo transfers and the block coloring, familiarity – the personal photographs displayed, and uniformity – the overall artist’s style, between the two pieces. One piece showcases what appears to be a dining room.…

The artists that have inspired me the most so far in my work are Anselm Kiefer, the Chapman brothers and Monet. I first came across Anselm Kiefer and Monet when doing the painting module of our project; although Kiefer is more of a mixed media artist; I had been aware of their work previously however. I came across the Chapman brothers in one of our art history lectures and thought it could be quite interesting to see how their landscapes compare to the more classical painted landscapes. Monet was one of the forefront artists during the impressionism movement in the late nineteenth century. Monet rejected the classical styles of painting and took on his own much more expressive style choosing to enhance the colours he saw which make his work…

Artists use metaphor as a way to express their artwork in a meaningful manner, through object. An artwork/object has the potential to be anything that the creator decides it to be viewed as. Artists Alberto Giacometti and Andy Goldsworthy use the relationship between the drawing and the development of the three dimensional artwork.…
