The Knights Templar were formally endorsed by the Catholic Church in 1129 A.D, only eleven years after their formation. This gave them lots of political power. The endorsement meant that the knights had the ability to alter the cross on their uniform. The church also let the knights change the color of the cross to red and also let them change the looks. Due to the influence of the church the knights became much more powerful, trustworthy and popular. By the end of the first crusades the knights had helped hundreds of people escape the violence and converted many Muslims to the Catholic religion. The church were also said to believe that the knights had found the Holy Grail and hid it on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem (Templar). The knights also built the Chartres Cathedral in Chartres France via orders from the king himself. Although the church may have endorsed the knights they dropped their endorsement in 1312 as their infamy began to rise because of the rumors that the king had started. The knights were ruled by a grandmaster, started a world bank, and were the first Catholic order of knights ever, and the church was a huge part of their operations. Now that I have done the research I know why this has become such a huge part of history and why many people try to collect Templar treasure.
