There are a lot of on-going debates about the traditional grading system. Many argue that the system deters learning therefore; it should be overhauled and/or reformed. Alfie Kohn, an American author and educator that speaks and writes about education and parenting is very much opposed to the traditional grading system. In his essay “From Degrading to De-Grading”, Alfie Kohn argues against it, he claim that students are so grade driven that it reduces their interest in learning, creativity and preference for challenging tasks. Not only that, it also encourages cheating, disrupt curriculum and waste teachers’ time.…
n The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, Jake is a very harsh, very bitter character especially when contrasted with the naivety and frivolousness of Robert Cohn. When Jake talks or references Cohn it is in a distasteful manner masked with unimpressed indifference. While at the beginning of the book Jake describes Cohn as physically strong and masculine he then goes to discredit this by branding him unmemorable and childlike due to him being "moulded by two women who trained him" (Hemingway 52). Instead of making Robert Cohn out to be desirable and interesting person, Jake portrays him as static and one dimensional. This is due to his innate jealousy of Robert that Jake himself does not even realize.…

As I came into grasp of what the story “The Most Dangerous Game” was trying to betray. I quickly realized how the game of hunting had turned into a more serious competition, between a man and the hunt. I saw how Rainsford had suddenly been put into a competition as the prey instead of the hunter. A situation Rainsford had never encountered in his professional career. Zaroff was the hunter the countless winner of the game/competition.…
Grade Inflation: In Alfie Kohn’s article, “The Dangerous Myth of Grade Inflation,” Kohn analyzes the complaints of student’s grades rising over the years. During his analysis Kohn looked for data that demonstrated reasons why grades were thought to have been inflated versus the students motivation behind achieving higher grades. Kohn also explains that it is difficult to determine the reasoning behind grade inflation claims. These claims may be false depending on the time period in which the claims were evaluated (Bergmann 261).…

If grade inflation was to happen and students were to be graded Schlesinger belives that students would enter the real world with an inaccurate sense of their abilites. While these students are in the real world they have this feeling “ that…
Supporters of the non-scaled grading system have been advocating for the removal of the scaled grading system. However, the scaled grading system is more advantageous than the non-scaled grading system. The argument that the pass fail grading system helps to asses’ students’ basic command in a better way is not accurate. One of the advantage of using the scaled grading system is its importance for the selection of students for the college admission. The scaled grading system gives an opportunity for college recruiters to pick good students.…

If more is expected from students, they will learn more. Even though teachers are doing this with the best intentions, grade inflation is only depriving students off their right to proper education. Rather than just handing good grades to students, we should inspire them to work hard for it. All that futile self-esteem without any knowledge isn’t going to help anybody and its about time today’s teachers and students should accept it.
