From the beginning of recorded history, there have been many different ways to prepare food. From cavemen eating raw flesh to modern restaurant standards, food preparation has advanced in many ways. The laws of kashrut compose a diet called kosher. Although some see this as an expensive or time-consuming tradition, there are benefits to this way of life. The practice of a kosher diet has a positive effect on the community for many reasons, including the availability of jobs, the care of the product, which could prevent illness, and a sense of civic pride due to the ritual slaughter of the animal. Most importantly, the practice of a kosher diet has a positive impact on the community because it leads to the availability of jobs. For example, one source states, “Kosher slaughterhouses must employ shochtim — those trained in the laws of shechita, ritual slaughter — as well as supervisors who can be consulted on unusual or contentious circumstances” (“Ask The Expert”). Kosher slaughterhouses have to hire someone who is trained in this specific ritual slaughter method. Because the people hired are trained, it ensures the quality of the animal. One source says, “Another advantage of shechita is that it ensures rapid, complete draining of the blood, which is also necessary to render the meat kosher” (Rich). One of the rules of the kosher diet is that one can not consume any type of blood, which is why draining of the blood is necessary. This provides a less likely chance of undercooking the meat, which results in a less likely chance of illness.
