In the beginning she was confused, yet laughing then when she realized I kept going she began to truly concentrate and pay attention. Courtney was patient, but once it had passed 15 minutes she became tiresome and easily distracted. Courtney wanted to leave, but she could not because I explicitly shared with her through silence that she could not until I allowed her to. After the experiment I questioned Courtney and asked her why it wasn’t as hard as I expected for her to understand me. She shared that she had family that were mute and that she has grown up to truly pay attention and learned to read body language. Justice to my astonishment stayed throughout the experiment and shared what she belived my message to Courtney was, it was not exactly correct but she did has an idea of where it was going. The reactions I got at the post office were not to my surprise, people surrounding stared but did not intervene. The lady who was servcicing me did not act as surprised as I thought, it was just like I was another customer who she was servicing. When approaching the lady with words she was then surprised and shared that working for a college she has experienced many different culture actions that she’s learned not to react to them, but treat them as if normal. From the papers in BAAL, the section Culture is a Verb: Anthropological aspects of language and cultural process by Brian V. Street of the University of Sussex writes about his perspective on the relationship of language and culture. Streets shares on page 29 in the book, “The formalization of language, then, is what serves to construct culture: it is which gives apparent fixity, unity and norms to disparate sets of people on the ground.” Language forms culture, through the formation of language as Street shares culture exist and establishes it’s rules and ways. The sound of a language could effect culture in a significant way, for instance I beleice that a calming sound can create a mellow simplistic cuutre, while a more loud or edgy sound could call for vibrant and strong culture
