Context:
There are many different types of ways that language is used that some people don’t understand, for example, in sports umpires have their own sought of language such as basketball; jump ball, travelling, technical foul and so on. I will be focusing like on the language used in Facebook.
What is Facebook?
Facebook is free to sign up for and is a social networking site that allows you to chat to your friends and family. It keeps you up to date with what your friends do. You can Join Facebook groups, play games and browse through friend’s profiles to see what they’ve been up to.

Facebook was made originally for uni students to communicate with each other over the internet, however due to its popularity; facebook is now open to everyone. The majority of its users are teenagers but there are also a lot of older people on facebook.
What type of language is used on facebook and why?
Facebook is a worldwide social networking site so I assume all languages are used. Most people I know of use a lot of slang. The following are some reasons I came up with as to why we use slang.
Time- timing is important because we can’t get enough of it, typing full words can get time consuming especially when were in a rush. Privacy- kid’s think that by shortening words down their parents won’t know what they are saying
For fun- people use slang because it’s quick and easy.
When is slang used and when isn’t it?
Slang is most commonly used when talking to friends however if you are chatting to someone, for example your employer you chat using a more formal type of language.

Has facebook and other social media changed the way we write and talk?
There’s no way you can say social media hasn’t changed the way we communicate between people. We can share our thoughts or make plans to hangout. I believe it has changed us and has shifted us away from communicating face to face and has affected the way we speak and write English.
Social media allows us to communicate with people around the globe. Although it has changed the way we communicate it has allowed us to keep friendships alive over great distances around the world, but also increased the pressure placed on a person to keep more friendships going.
For an example, the average amount of friends a person has on Facebook is roughly around 200, even if half of the people are random adds, that’s still a lot of friendships to try and maintain. In result it influences us to write stuff in short amounts of time.
