The Council’s first belief is that social justice evades an easy definition. These is the step that discusses what social justice is. Social justice is a term that defers depending on what context it is being used in. The term can lead to the discussion of many different topics: racism, sexism, classism, culture, spiritual belief, etc., and the term can be very controversial. When people think of the term social justice, who they are can determine what they believe social justice is. Because of this, the Council recommends having students look at what social justice means to them, the community, and the world and the words that are used when discussing social justice (“Beliefs about Social Justice”). I could first look at Lessons for Women by Ban Zhao. This piece was written by a Chinese woman circa 45-120. In this piece, Ban Zhao created a rule book for women in China. Through her text, she shows her own intelligence while down playing her abilities by talking about how “unworthy” and “unintelligent” she is. I could also read works by other Chinese women like Yuan Cai, Chiao Chung-ch’ ing, and Liu Xiang. All of these works talk about the lives of woman in China. By reading the work of all these woman, one can notice a trend that each author sees woman in a different light. There is no way to say all woman in Medieval China were one way, and they do not all follow the same rules. I could then look at how society acts toward woman today by looking at woman who hold power and comparing them to each other and woman who are less powerful. What do people say about them? What standards do these women have to meet? Are the standards all the same? I can then use my answer to then look at men in society. How are their expectations the same? How are they different? By doing a project like this, one could be lead to wonder about other things that are not the

    Is Everyone Really Equal? A Student’s Response to Chapter 3 and 4 Is Everyone Really Equal is a novel by Ozlem Sensoy and Robin DiAngelo that introduces individuals to concepts that are fundamental in helping to understand and become involved in social justice education.
