McCain went to the Naval Academy in collage but soon was dispatched to Vietnam. While in Vietnam he was tortured as a prisoner of war until released in 1973. Soon after, he served as a Republican Congressman and Senator from Arizona, he had his own idea of the American Dream in his A Cause Greater Than Self speech, “the patriot must not just accept, but in his or her own way protect the ideals that gave birth to our country…honors the duties, loyalties, the inspirations.” (Ph. 7) In his idea of the American Dream, he believes that in order to get to what you want, you need to work hard and support your country to achieve success, and this is probably his idea of the American Dream because of all that he has been through in his tough times in the Vietnam
