Letter To Gilman Scholarship

To promote the Gilman Scholarship and international education, I would like to visit my old high school and give a presentation to inform students interested in learning a foreign language on what it’s like to study abroad. In order to do so, during my time in China, I will take many pictures and recollect memories that could inspire students to ignore the challenges of learning a new language from scratches and motivating them to adventure the world and the many opportunities given to the ones that decide to leave behind their comfort zone and learn something new, I want to let students know about my experience to help demonstrate to students what it is like to live in a different country and learn how other cultures work, to show them the beauty of learning about others culture and their social statistics. I hope that by sharing my experience abroad I will help inspire students to learn a second language and even study abroad themselves. …show more content…

With these chitchats, Chinese, the hardest, most baffling, language, became the most beautiful and connectable language for me next to Persian. While still in middle school I felt responsible to help my Persian family, friends and teachers with the everyday language barriers they encountered. My expanded knowledge of Chinese language gave me the confidence to adventure in places, unknown to foreigners, study Chinese Painting, travel for eight hours to Xinjiang prefecture to play as a background actress in the movie The Kite Runner, and encountered director Marc Forster and the shooting crew. But I knew just as how I interpret words in context, I have to interpret people's actions in the context of their culture.…

Each author enthusiastically recounts the excitement of traveling to a different place, but also reflects on hardships encountered and lessons learned. Those stories are In the first story, Fire and Water, the author Connor (2011) writes about her experiences in the Northern part of Africa travelling with her mother, boyfriend, and her boyfriend’s younger brother.…
