Tita represents the rebel inside of all of us. She hates the way that everything around her revolves and want to change it. She wants to be free from the chains of her oppression, that her mother has bound her by, however, Mama Elena and Rosaura prevent her from being able to be released from her torture. She is shown as the head of the ranch where she is the one who makes the decisions of what happens. Mama Elena, in the story forbids Tita to marry pedro because she is the youngest of her siblings. Years later, after Tita going insane and Rosaura marrying Pedro, Mama Elena is attacked by Rebels where Chencha is raped and Mama Elena is crippled. Tita comes back to the ranch to take care of Mama Elena after the attack, and now she is near her death, Mama Elena refuses the care of Tita even though her food would cure her illness. Tita does give Mama Elena food when chencha was not there to give her food, Mama Elena spits out her food for its bitter taste. Mama elena then makes herself throw up any food given to her in spite of never wanting to eat any food made by tita. Mama Elena comes back in the story as a ghost in November, trying once again to reinforce her ideas into Tita by becoming a ghost to scold at her for loving Pedro. Tita confronts the Ghost of Mama Elena saying that she no longer cares of what she thinks, and from this Mama Elena’s spirit is released and a fireball burns
