While non conformity is the complete opposite. Since it gives them the feeling of acceptance acknowledgement, conformists choose to stay the same as society. However, the nonconformist chooses their lifestyle because it gives them feelings of happiness and passion which is one of the main reasons to live. In the article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man,” Logan Feys describes Leopard Man’s lifestyle be saying “Leopard Man, however, is no ordinary freak. He doesn’t live for other people’s reactions. He lives in solitude.” An example from this article is when Feys stated that Leopard Man lives in a small cabin in the middle of the Scottish wilderness. He also stated that in an interview, Leopard Man describes his lifestyle as true paradise. This statement conveys the fact that if people were to change themselves to fit in with society, they would lose their purpose and meaning in life. This statement important because it elaborates on how acting different is one of the most important parts of being an individual.Leopard Man is also considered a non- conformist. Another example on how conformity is bad is from the the story, “The Pedestrian,” which describes a man named Leonard Mead walking on the buckling concrete in his community and it is only him outside. In this story Leonard Mead is taking a walk to see and for air while everyone else in his society is indoors sitting down and watching television as if it took the souls out of their bodies. The popular film “Dead Poets Society”, illustrates a balance between conformity and nonconformity. In this movie conformity would be considered normal and no one really does anything different. It is the first day of school and Mr. Keating, their teacher, encourages them to be, think differently from others and sort of break out of the conformity that they are in. An example from the movie would be the scene when they talk about “Carpe Diem”. In this scene, Mr. Keating takes the boys outside to the trophy case to look at all the students in the previous years and asked them if any of those faces looked familiar to them, they all said that they do not recognize those faces. Afterwards, Keating explains to them about “Carpe Diem,” which means seize the day. He told them that if they do not seize the day, they will end up being like those boys in the picture, forgotten and insignificant. This example displays the fact that if an individual were to be an extreme conformist, they are not living life to the fullest. This quote also explains in order to be a human being, one must act differently from others. Another example from this film is when Mr. Keating gets up on his desk and tells his students to look at everything from a different way. This quote conveys the idea that there is no just one way of seeing something, instead, there are a variety of ways. This quote

“Carpe Diem” is a significant quote in Peter Weir’s film Dead Poets Society. It is a Latin phrase translating to “Pluck the day, trusting as little as possible in the future” or more commonly, “seize the day”. The philosophy and individualism is rigorously explored in the film and this unaided, influences the main characters to pursue individual growth and self-discovery. During this, both positive and negative aspects of the theme are represented through specific scenes, which use cinematographic techniques, and dialogue to emphasized the significance of the scene. John Keating teaches the students to be individuals and resist conformity in order to be themselves.…

Individuality is the quality of a particular person that distinguishes them from others. Often times in the world, we are forced to give up our individuality and conform with others. In Logan Fey’s article, The Sociology of Leopard Man, he claims that to be a human is to be an individual human, with individual tastes, talents, morals, etc. I agree with Fey, that being human is to be an individual, but some of our traits have been influenced by other people, or sometimes we are forced to give up our individuality for certain things, but we all must find our own way of living as ourselves content in society. Being an individual human means that one develops their own personality, attributes, tastes, goals, talents, and morals.…

In the essay, “ The sociology of Leopard Man”,written by Logan Feys talks about how you can lose your sense of individuality living in a perfect society where everything has to be perfect and artificial trying to be someone thing you're not and essentially becoming the perfect person everyone wants. . Feys says that he is unimpressed with people who change their hair dramatically or extreme tattooing and piercings all their doing is seeking attention. I don’t agree with Feys, because if that makes them happy then who cares what people say it’s all about what you think about yourself. If you don’t love yourself and how you look then people won’t either.…

We as a culture are pushed in a certain direction and forced to try and fit certain molds and we can be changed and can change ourselves to fit into society. A good example of being pushed to fit a mold is the military. Gwynne Dyer talks about the military creating a group identity in her article “Anybody’s Son Will…

Leopard Man’s Individuality and Conformity Logan Feys builds a powerful argument to persuade his audience that people should “be psychologically free enough and strong enough to live independently, leaving society and entering on no one’s terms but your own”. To strength the logic and persuasiveness of this argument, he uses a meaningful story of Tom Leopard, a man tattooed from head to toe with leopard spots. Another way Feys does this is by the use of rhetorical questions. Feys starts his argument of recounting the story of Tom Leopard- a man who rejects society and is psychologically free enough to live life independently on his own terms.…

Normally when people think of conformity, the negative connotations associated with the word come to mind. For instance, teens doing drugs or drinking alcohol because friends or siblings tell them it’s okay to do so. However, I don’t think conformity is always a bad thing, and I first hand experienced the positive effects of conforming.…

In the story Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, the protagonist Chris McCandless can relate to Ralph Waldo Emerson’s perspective in that nature is the key to success, and that nature is the heart of human life. Nature is a powerful, and flawless, everlasting beauty. In the eyes of Chris McCandless, transcendentalism is how you perceive your surroundings. This is shown by, “The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun”(Krakauer 57).…
