Love from the Shadows? Where Are you Going, Where Have You Been which was written by Joyce Carol Oates has a clear interpretation of evil coming from Arnold Friend and how he is as a demon trying to lure Connie into the dark world of sex with different emotions. Oates tends to use scenarios of real life and bring them to her story. The character of Arnold Friend harsh reality that Oates includes in her story is that demons like Arnold exist. Arnold Friend’s character was very well perceived as the Pied Piper of Tucson who was a mass murderer who killed teens.(Hurley 372).
Because she brought lifelike realities into the story, Oates maintained the presence evil around
Friend throughout the story.

Arnold Friend knows way too much about everything and everyone around to be a regular person especially one who is not from around the same area as Connie. Arnold claims to know all of Connie’s friends and where her family is at, which freaks out Connie and makes her ask Arnold how he knows so much and all he says back is, I know everybody. (Oates 1014). The omniscient capabilities that Arnold shows are just more justifications of him being a demon, or the devil himself. Arnold not only knows what is going on in the world around Connie, but also what she’s thinking and how she is as a person. Arnold knows for a fact that Connie is unhappy with her parents on a daily basis and gets into the sensitive spot with Connie as a way to open her up and go out with him. He felt that if he could draw Connie outside it would have to be with sex. Cause Arnold knows that’s what intrigues the younger girls.
The most obvious reason many believe Oates is portraying Arnold as a demon is the way
Arnold had to use trickery and blackmail to lure Connie who was just innocently mined out of her home and into his grasp. When Connie says she will call the police to restrain Arnold,
