Many believe that these so-called lucid dreams are just brief arousals from the sleeping state to what we know as a day dream. The main argument against lucid dreaming is that everyone who admits having accomplished reaching this state, were awake the whole time. Before recent technology, you could only believe what you were told by a test subject, and there was no way to tell if they were just laying down or actually in REM sleep. LaBerge has done an excellent job providing us with the ability to give signs when you reach certain stages of sleep. When you enter REM sleep your eyes will move or your fists will clench, both of which can be observed on a polygraph. LaBerge did this many times before attempting to study dreams by proving first, that he could study sleep patterns and prove his subjects were asleep. He was quoted saying “"it is embarrassingly awkward to assert that subjects who reported being certain that they were asleep while showing physiological indications of unequivocal sleep were actually awake”
