In Aida Benton’s book HIV Exceptionalism she gives a story two different individuals who have decided to take different positions in regards to their HIV status, and how this can impact their lives. For example, Alfred was very vocal about the fact that he was positive with HIV, and that he was doing the best he could to live in an optimistic manner. He also mentioned that he could not understand why someone would not want to be open about their struggles with HIV. Nafiatsu, on the other hand, does not want to expose her status with HIV. This is despite immense pressure that she has felt in her community to come out with her status, and she is even denied a job at her organization, because she is not open.…

Our Lady of the Lake College is a Catholic institution that was created in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, who firmly believed that all of creation spoke volumes of God’s love for us. St. Francis was raised in a fairly wealthy family, and it was not until he was captured at battle for two years, that he decided to embark on the glorious journey of knowing Jesus Christ. He began preaching to word of God, and embraced others that were not of his kind. Students who attend Our Lady of the Lake College should be of the same example to others throughout their academic careers. As Franciscans, We live by five core values that are service, reverence and love for all of life, joyfulness of spirit, humility, and justice.…

Based on the actions of multiple churches, I would say they do not have a hidden agenda. Surely, each volunteer does selfless acts for their own personal reasons. Some people enjoy the feeling, others feel compelled to because they do not wish to disappoint God, and some are simply terrified to go to “Hell” so they do anything to prove that they are Godly people. However, I do not think these motives matter, only the results matter and the results show that the churches were willing to spend their money rebuilding the homes of many people before they even rebuilt their own church. Also, as it was reported, “of the top ten private charities involved in Katrina relief, six were faith-based” (Adams 2013: 134).…

Making a change in the world for the health care provided to Jehovah’s Witnesses didn’t become so personal until recently. My cousin who is a Jehovah’s Witness as well passed away last month after being put on the waiting list for liver transplant. She got sick two weeks before, but really didn’t think anything of it until she started having sharp stomach pain and was having trouble walking. She and her husband went to the hospital that night, there they tried to give her a blood transfusion, but since we do not accept blood as Jehovah’s Witnesses she refused to take it. The hospital they were at in Austin couldn’t assist her any further so they transferred her to the hospital down here in Katy where things started to take a turn for the worse.…

I acknowledge how much better everything is when there is no cost and how I prefer being hoisted on shoulders in acclaim to the disdain of anonymous spray cans. ”(Boyle, p.71) Gregory Boyle is right; the world shouldn’t put price on the thing we need most in this world. Everyone should have an equal chance to succeed in this world but the government doesn’t allow you too. In James 2:14-26 he says, “if a Christian becomes aware of the needs of others but does nothing to help, he lacks genuine faith”(James 2:14-26). This is true and begs the question, Are Christians true to their religion and willing to help others or are they too lazy too stand up for what’s right?…

Planned Parenthood is currently under a great deal of scrutiny concerning whether or not they violated Federal Law by selling aborted baby parts. The Federal Government is also trying to decide if they should cut the $500 million of funding that Planned Parenthood receives. While Planned Parenthood may have been breaking Federal Law, I do not believe that the government should defund them. Planned Parenthood does much more than just abortions; they do STI/STD testing and treatment, provide multiple types of contraception, cancer screenings and prevention, pregnancy tests and prenatal services, adoption referrals to other agencies, and urinary tract infection treatments. All of these services are available for men, women, and teenagers.…

Since 1985, the Center for Victims of Torture have worked diligently to create a “future in which torture ceases to exist and its victims have hope for a new life” (CTV, 2017). Their direct mission statement for the CVT is as follows: they are here to heal the wounds of torture on individuals, their families, and their communities, and to end torture worldwide. I chose them for this assignment because I grew up in the era of a war on terror; and with this fear comes pain, fear, and torture for my fellow man overseas. The CVT states that their strategic plan for 2017 - 2019 is to build on their past work from these last few decades, and this includes training and the spreading of technical knowledge, increasing their reach to help more survivors, and strengthening their fact-based research to provide a higher quality of assistance to the victims found both domestically and internationally (2017). The Center for Victims of Torture are an international non-profit organization from St.…

Since last year, I have been helping many churches in my neighborhood, which includes the Anglican church right down the street near my dad's church. While I am not a believer, I still help around not only my parents' church, but other churches as well because I can actually do something to help those who are in need. I understand that churches need all the help they can get, because I live with parents who own a church themselves. Many of the churches around my neighborhood are poor, and have older people who come to the church. Due to the fact that young blood is rare, it is hard to do more physical work with just the members of the church.…

I would be thrilled to having a ticket that would allow me to join the organization, Doctors Without Borders.
