Lady Macbeth’s True Malice “Behind every great man, there is a great woman” – (Groucho Marx). This quote interprets that every man with great character has a woman with the same nature supporting him. However, in the ‘Shakespearean’ tragedy of Macbeth, a more fitting quote would be “behind every evil man, there is a more evil woman”. Macbeth was a villainous man with a dark desire to become king, though his desire was suppressed as a result of his kind and innocent nature. His wife, Lady Macbeth fostered and brought out his ambitions and desires, hence making the desire to become king an absolute reality. Starting off, when Lady Macbeth reads the letter sent by Macbeth, she hears the possibility of Macbeth as king of Scotland, so she starts to plan and suggest heinous ideas that revolve around the treasonous murder of King Duncan. After reading the letter of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth speaks to herself about how sweet Macbeth is, but lacks motivation to become king. Lady Macbeth shows her true villain spirit by planning to foster the evil ambition from Macbeth to murder Duncan. Lady Macbeth knows that her husband is a kind and noble man; hence that is why she plants the seed in his head leading to murder. Instead of bringing the best out of her husband, Lady Macbeth brings out the worst in him. Adding on, once she reads the letter, without even talking to Macbeth, she starts thinking of seizing the throne, exemplifying how villainous she is. Speaking of the golden round, when she realizes that the king is visiting her castle to celebrate Macbeth’s new title, she declares that “ the fatal entrance of Duncan under my battlements” (1.5.41-43) propheting that he shall die. To have the emotions to co-ordinate this murder, Lady Macbeth calls on spirits to “unsex me [Lady Macbeth] here/ And fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full/ Of direst cruelty” (1.5.43-46).
