Madam C.J. Walker was born on December 23, 1867, she was born under the name of Sarah Breedlove on the same cotton plant that her parents had been enslaved at before the Civil War. At her age of fourteen she was married to escape her abusive brother in law, at the age of twenty she was widowed and she moved to St. Louis, Missouri. Before she started her multi millionaire company she worked as a poorly paid washer woman, while in this occupation she started experimenting with ways to strengthen curly hair and finally found a formula that would create a smooth shiny coiffure for African American women's hair. She also started a mail order and door to door business. In 1910 she transferred the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company to Indianapolis. When there her company peaked at 3,000 workers, "Walker Agents" These people were women dressed in long black skirts and white blouses that helped her manufacture and sell her product.One problem in her business was money. She worked as a poorly paid washer woman and she was a widow making it a hard start for her
