To ask a bookworm about his or her favorite book is to ask a parent about his or her favorite child. Every book is dear to a lover of words, but one of my favorite books is Made You Up, which was written by a college student named Francesca Zappia. Detailing the events that occur throughout the senior year of a schizophrenic girl, the book initially seems to be an average novel to the reader. Sure, the story is interesting, but it isn't extraordinary. However, as the story progresses, the reader comes to the shocking realization that many events described in the book were products of the narrator's unreliable interpretation of reality. Because I have read so many books, it is difficult for books to catch me by surprise. This book exceeded all

In “Behind the Beautiful Forevers” Katherine Boo argues that societies are becoming corrupt because of capitalism’s prevalence in modern societies. Capitalism is creating an economy where products and profits are owned by companies and individuals instead of the government. ("Capitalism" Merriam Webster) Having profits owned by individuals drive owners to create inequitable systems that take advantage of lower class citizens. The systems drive the lower class to compete against one another to create a small profit, that will soon be taken away by the individuals or companies that “own” the profit created by the system.…

The novel Go ask Alice, written by an Anonymous author is a story is based on a real diary, kept by a seemingly conventional teenager who turned into a suicidal drug addict. The presumed author of the diary, Alice, has a raw style and format of writing that fascinated me. The diary writing style allowed the book to show more real emotions, and did not hold back. It was as if Alice was talking to her best friend and thought that no one would see her diary. For me as a teenager, it was easy to empathise with Alice’s problems.…

To begin with, Demi Lovato’s lyrics in “Stone Cold” as well as William Butler Yeats’ in his poem “Never give all the heart” are only alike in the aspects of their themes, speakers, and the device of end rhyme. To begin with, the two pieces share the theme, Heartbreak of Betrayal, as both writers express emotions of the pain that came from their previous relationship. For example, in Lovato’s song, she sings about her past relationship that is now broken due to her partner moving on to another woman. Similar to this, Yeats writes about how women will break the heart of anyone who puts their all into a relationship. Furthermore, another device that these pieces share is the speaker.…

The Kardashians and the Change of Beauty In 1751, British essayist David Home, wrote “Beauty is no quality in things themselves…; Each mind perceives a different beauty (Hume)”. In the last two hundred and sixty-six years, this concept of beauty has all but vanished. Today beauty comes from a social aspect, completely corrupted by money hunger companies, or the desire to be accepted. In American societies, children, teens, and young adults all have icons.
