In recent years, major league baseball has increasing difficulty holding the attention of an audience due to immobility of the league and other rivaling sports. To curb this problem sports league respond by proposing reducing game length but is this really the way to go? Resorting to such measures could alienate dedicated fans, event-attending fans who would not feel the need to attend short games. An alternative that could shorten the game so it might be wise to emulate the system of promotion and relegation which most of the world uses.

Well promotion and relegation will solve the problem of decreasing interest by introducing a new element of competition that baseball has yet to experience. Teams will have to not only play to win but also to secure their position in their current league or move to a higher league which could result in increased revenue, media exposure and renewed audience interest for successful teams . Teams which are promoted to a higher division will have increased player pay in order to compete at the new level, but they will also make profits from the increased interest and demand that comes with the new market. Relegated teams will face the opposite problem; they will have high player fees but lower than ideal profits from the decreased pricing and demand for their tickets. The change to a system of promotion and relegation would require that MLB teams make changes, such as cutting ties with minor league team that are utilize as farms from where they draw player to fill their roster .So why has baseball not adopted the system of promotion & relegation? The owners of major league teams are unwilling to allow a system that could potentially reduce their revenue if in which they invested in fails to meet the new standards of competition and fall to a lower less prestigious
