Marching Band: The Importance Of Hard Work

Decent Essays
Marching band is something that has influenced me to work hard in and of the classroom. It has taught me that hard work does not always get you what you want, the execution of what you know is a big part to show what you have learned. For example, this year our marching band attended Grand Nationals in Indianapolis and we had a great performance. Out of the 95 bands, 34 bands made it to semi-finals. We placed 35th and we were .05 out of semi-finals. I have learned that hard work will get you far but also you have to carry out the task in a way that will take you even farther. This knowledge will help guide me through college and life because I know the importance of hard work and how you can apply it to different situations.

This year, our Marching Band got the chance to go to Nashville, Tennessee where we encountered the different musical culture they had. We attended The Grand Ole Opry, a concert where many talented country musicians performed live in a giant hall. It was a fascinating experience when we learned about the musician’s lives through their music and what they consider everyday aspect of their lives that we don’t have farther up north. One of the band members got the opportunity to participate in a dance off onstage during one of the breaks, something the whole band celebrated in camaraderie. A museum with all things country music, “Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum” held all kinds of pieces from various dresses and instruments of musicians from…

Adrenaline ran through my veins all day, and Disney references spilling out of my mouth like a broken record in a player. No one else accepted my elation, but I on the other hand, had a countdown down for this jaunt as soon as I heard of it in August. As I sat down on the dirty, sweaty gym floor like the rest of the band, I began to process everything that was happening. In 26 hours, 48 minutes, and 28 seconds, according to my countdown, the entire high school band would be in Orlando, Florida. In four days time, our provincial marching band would be featured marching in a parade in the Magic Kingdom of the happiest place on earth!…

Mary, I really enjoyed your post. From being in the marching band in undergrad, I know there is a great deal of logistics that go in to the football game itself, but I had no idea that more went into the before the game. I think about our department planning program initiatives and a lot of times it is just the Community Directors along with the Area Coordinators, but planning a game and having enough moving pieces that there are 50 people sitting around the table, that is a lot! I have to say I have a greater appreciation for game day knowing a little bit more about what all goes into it.…

As captain of managing all equipment for rehearsals, competitions, and attending to all field duties necessary for my high school’s marching band program, I have learned that communication and organization is a pivotal aspect to group success. In my two-year tenure of being captain, I organized whole football fields to be painted every week during the season, transported marching band and color guard equipment which include sabers and instruments, and built a scaffolding. Throughout many competitions, the elasticity of my leadership abilities was tested with multiple time constraints. One time, a truck containing all the bands props had a flat tire and arrived late at night. Not only, did my crew have to move quickly, but they unluckily had…
