Women prefer to talk in private places because they like to talk with people they know and familiar with. In front of these people, women do not need to be afraid about making mistakes and they can say whatever they want to them. For men, they prefer to speak in public because they enjoy to receive the attention from others. They feel comfortable about it and speaking in public allow them to show off their skill and knowledge to others.
Thirdly, Tannen explained that there are stereotypes in society, both in the past and the present. People tend to believe that women talk more than men because women talk in situation that men would not participate and topic that men do not interested in. In history, we can find that there are different physical punishment punishing women for talking inappropriately. Even though nowadays, a lot of research has proved that in terms of talking frequency and time men do actually talk more than women.
In spite of the fact that Tannen has thoroughly explained how men and women have different ways of communication makes them unable to understand each other's ideas and leads to disputes.
