On September 20th, the day of our picnic, God gave us a beautiful day filled with plenty of sunshine and cool breezes. So many of our brothers and sisters from other fraternity’s took part in our annual picnic and shared in Franciscan companionship. As I looked around the grounds of the friary and saw our Franciscan Charism flowing among those in attendance, I thought to myself this is what our Charism is all about, sharing, loving, caring, allowing the Holy Spirit to move in us and through others. This year I volunteered at Atlanta food bank. The Atlanta food bank is an organization that provides food and other critical resources for low-income Georgians who suffer from hunger and food insecurity. The mission of the Atlanta community food bank is to fight hunger by engaging, education and empowering the community. Their mission is lived out every day through seven projects that help engage, educate and empower both people in need and those who want help. Yesterday's hunger banquet was a representation of the different levels of hunger in Haiti. There was three different levels of social classes; high class, middle class, and low class. We were all given different types of food and served differently. First class had napkins, table cloths, silverware, cooled beverages, and a varieties of courses which pertained of warmed foods. For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…
As my community assignment, I chose to attend bingo night amongst the elderly at a nursing home. From my experience, I was able to take new views on the elderly, more understanding on the reasons behind their certain behaviors, and knowledge of their daily lives as citizens in the nursing home. My experience held both things I had expected, yet many things which were unexpected to me before I went. My assumptions on certain things were proven wrong and I am glad that I had the opportunity to learn new information about a large group of our society that I was not fully familiar with prior to my visit. I am sorry for the losses that you experienced on Valentine’s day this year. The reason why we believed this was a good approach to the situation is that with dwindling down their menu, they can start to focus on producing quality hamburgers, their core competency. As a group, we felt that McDonald’s was starting to produce products that didn’t fit well into their core competencies, which in turn was hurting their profits and the overall experience a customer obtains from going into a McDonalds. For example, even though the exact items of removal were not disclosed, we felt that McDonald’s should not be producing salads of any sort because people do not go to McDonald’s hoping to eat a fresh garden salad. People go to McDonald’s to enjoy the wonderful hamburgers they have built themselves around, so providing the customer with more options that are irrelevant to their core competency is unnecessary. The other measure that the article mentions that McDonald’s is taking is adding computer tablets to allow customers to add toppings of their choice to their favorite sandwich.…
