When I think of nurses, I think about them helping and caring for patients. I feel that nurses should be less sexualized and not associated with the abuse of prescription medicine. They should be recognized and championed for their skills and education. In my opinion, doctors should not be quickly dismissing what nurses have to say considering that the nurse's role is to assist in the care and comfort of their patients. I believe that in the nursing profession, there may be a time where the doctors do mistreat nurses because they think they feel they are less educated. As stated by Reitha Cabaniss (2011), “in television shows Nurses are frequently shown as less intelligent” (p.115). The portrayal of nurses in Nurse Jackie may impact the public view of professional nursing by associating all nurses with similar behaviour, or that they are capable of such behavior. In order to obtain the most relevant information I have used academic search engines such as: Medline, CINAHL, PROQUEST and SUMMON to assess the accuracy of how the media affects the image of nurses. I refined my search by only including peer reviewed articles published from 2009 to 2014. The terms I used to search were image, nurses, media, naughty nurse, and nurses’ substance abuse.
