Melissa McGee is a photographer that is located in the Kansas City area. She is a portrait photographer and she has newborn, senior, family, pets and “Boutique School” photos. McGee’s Boutique School photos are a more personalized version of school or daycare pictures. She is hired by schools and daycares for these photo sessions and they go above and beyond the typical school photo (McGee).
In March, I reached out to her with an email. In my first email, I explained what I was doing, what my paper was about and how I had a few questions about her and her business. Louis, therefore, KC is where she calls home (McGee). According to McGee, the market is mostly women and men in their 20’s and 30’s, with only pets. Most of the owners’ dogs were shelter animals (McGee). She also let me know that photography is a competitive business. However, pet photography is a bit less competitive than newborn or family photography regarding Kansas City (McGee). She goes on to say she believes pet photography is slightly less competitive than other genres because McGee believes other photographers thinking dealing with animals can be a hassle (McGee). I understand what she means. You can’t really control an animal, regarding posing. And some animals aren’t comfortable around other people. Lastly, lights can distract an animal. McGee says one possible hassle for other photographers is it is harder for them to connect with an animal, rather than a human (McGee). I agree, you can’t have a regular conversation with a pet like you do with humans. However, I believe I have the ability to connect with animals. Based on the reviews on her website, McGee seems to be able to connect with the pets and their owners. Lastly, McGee also discussed how rewarding pet photography
