My family members that had been diagnosed with a mental disability were often placed in mental treatment centers or mental institutions. As a family, I felt that everyone should have been aware and involved as to what was going on with the individual. A lot of families are uncomfortable discussing mental illness with outsiders because of the stigma that could be placed on the individual or family. This way of thinking is often seen in the African American family.
Working in the mental health field has shown me how important it is to have a strong supportive system that entails family and friends. Accepting a mental diagnosis can be devastating for everyone involved, but it is not a death sentence! Family members may find it hard to handle a mental disability diagnosis, but must realize that resources and treatment are available. Removing individuals from their homes and placing them in mental hospitals to live are over because it has been seen that they can live a healthy lifestyle with treatment and strong support system.
