The painting I have chosen is on Display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is named Countess Alexander Nikolaevitch Lamsdorff, painted in 1859 by Franz Xaver Winterhalter of Germany. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "Winterhalter was trained to paint in Germany, he went on to paint many European Aristocrats. He painted the 24 year old Countess, wife of Alexander Nikolaevitch Lamsdorff. In her lap is a book of poetry, which was inspired by Winterhalter to pain because her father was a translator. The choice of dress was inspired by his upbringing by sitters." So basically the portrait that he painted was of a wealthy woman to commemorate her beauty.

Of course since this is a portrait of a beautiful woman, the artist would want to paint her in a way that makes her look gentle and kind, refined and fresh. If you pay close attention, there is a texture created by the paint on the chair and the blanket, and both of those create the illusion of actual furniture. The color scheme and textures used in the portrait work well together. It gives off the feeling of realism, like this is a setting you could walk out your front door and see (although not really because this is back in 1859 in Europe.) The media works well with this portrait, because of it being so realistic the oil gives off the feeling of a realistic piece of work, and is easily blend-able, which would help the artist be able to blend and make the piece look real. The canvas would be great to use for the paint, because it would allow the paint to move easily, and give off the proper color you're using. The artist purposefully used the colors and paint, because he knew it would give the countess a soft, gentle, warm, kind view. Just by looking at this painting, you would think that she was in real life a sweet, gentle, kind person. I think that's the look they were going for. I had also read in his bio on the Metropolitan Museum of Art, that Winterhalter often painted his sitters and others in their best wardrobe and positions. SO he would purposefully paint people to make them look great and beautiful, in their best

The Russian Bride’s Attire is a life-sized oil painting by the Russian artist Konstantin Makovsky that is currently hanging in the Legion of Honor. At 110 x 147 inches, the piece pulls you in; as if you could step right into it and begin helping the ladies prepare the bride for marriage, or maybe bust her out of there. Makovsky is telling a subtle story through the composition and subject of this painting. The amount of emotion he brings with his angles and use of light and color is breath taking. He’s telling the story of a young girl who is set to be married off to the king, although this may sound glamourous, the girl looks unhappy, and no wonder; she’s a teenager preparing for marriage, preparing to leave behind her family and everything…

The very first painting that did this was Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints Leonard, Jerome, John the Baptist, and Francis. This painting is by Nicolo di Maestro Antonio d’Ancona. It caught my eye because even though it was created in during the Renaissance; it still has a lot of details, beautiful colors, and meaning. The first artwork is Portrait of Thomas Inglefield by Samuel Ireland. It was created in circa 1787 by etching. Thomas Inglefield, who posed for this inspiring portrait, was born on December 18, 1769. He was British, and he was one of the many kids who had been born with no leg or arm limbs in the eighteenth century. The main reason to why this is just an amazing art piece is because though Inglefield lacked limbs, he was able to achieve his dream.…

In the painting, Christ is illuminated by being colored in with very pale colors, but he surrounded by a myriad of colors. Each person depicted in the painting, especially those in the foreground, are each wearing clothes that have different hues, such as the Virgin is wearing blue while the Saint John is wearing red. The colors of each of their clothing are quite intense adding to the energy of the scene. There is also a mix of warm and cool tones throughout the painting, which adds the disorder of the painting. Another important aspect of the painting is the use of color in the middle ground and background.…

The Metropolitan museum of art is a place where history can be seen in many unique depictions. The Metropolitan Museum of art, also known as the MET, "presents over 5,000 years of art from around the world for everyone to experience and enjoy." On Tuesday, December 28, 2016 I had the chance to go to the MET with my friends Reyna and Zach. When we explored the museum we came across a christmas tree, a glass ceiling, and paintings of George Washington, the Hudson River, the Civil War, and American-Indian & Western. The museum gave me a chance to explore different periods of history through the eyes of many different artists.…

One painting that really caught my eye is the painting Jupiter and Thetis by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Getlein, 2016). This painting was inspired from Homer’s Iliad, “The Greek epic of the Trojan War (Getlein, 2016).” Without knowing what it really means you can tell more or less what is happening based off of the artists creativity. From first sight, you can see A man sitting in a throne which depicts royalty.…

This oil painting is done on a wood panel was painted sometime between 1503 and 1519, during the time Leonardo da Vinci was living in Florence. The artwork is now in the louvre after being repaired in 1951 because the poplar wooden panel it was painted on showed signs of warping and small cracks. Past the vast age of the painting the lines and detail are very well formed, the detail to clothing and far off landscape are just exquisite. The shading around the neck and hair is kind of blurry and spotty and the painting lacks detail on her chest. No one really knows who the woman depicted in the painting is, there are many speculations on who she actually is.…
