Research has found that racial prejudice is something that may be tolerated in the gay community (Callander, Newman, & Holt, 2015). The researchers posit that racial prejudices and preferences are more openly communicated in online communities than in person and found that many people do not consider voicing racial preferences as a microaggression or racism. These experiences of general racism perpetuated in the Gay community against people of color prove difficult and disconcerting for gay men of color. This type of framework may be used to make a transformation in an area such as racism. The interpretive framework of this observation is the social justice framework because the study will seek to recognize categorical themes from the coding in the observation transcript. The researcher will draft overall themes based on the behaviors of the observed. These themes will encompass the microaggressions that people of color in the Gay community from their White counterparts.
The Microaggresion-Interaction Situation
Three observations, over varying lengths of time, were completed of the interaction situation in three different LGBT friendly establishments — Tribe, Play, and Trax which are jock, twink, and bear friendly respectively. The assumptions are that the interactions will not be as blatant as online; however, I predict that there will be violations of the assumptions. The interaction situation was similar at each site as there were parallel interaction behaviors even though these were distinct places that catered to different subcultures (jock/fit, twink, bear/bigger).
