In many mystery novels there is a victim and a criminal, but what if the victim was the criminal? In the Middle of the Night by Robert Cormier is a book about a young man that was in an accident over twenty years ago. Now he is a grown man that has a family. Him and his family are now directly affected by phone calls and threats. The one who is causing all this is a victim that died in the accident and wants revenge for herself not being able to live her life. She doesn't realize that the only thing preventing her from living is her hatred for this man and his family. This novel creates suspense by using words that are said by certain characters, this novel also foreshadows to keep the reader interested, Robert keeps the reader fully engulfed

In this novel Robert Cormier foreshadows very little, but when he does it isn't very clear. “ Never answer the telephone!” (36) that outs up a red flag in the reader's mind to why would his father say that we can tell his father is also very strict, but it’s an odd comment to make to a sixteen year old. Robert also foreshadowed earlier in the book when Lulu says,” The sins of the father will be visited upon by the son. “(17) the reader is put up with a question of what might happen next. Lulu and her brother Dave have an interesting conversation that foreshadows. “ Why are you calling him again? Its part of the plan.” the reader is now aware that Lulu and Dave are planning something awful. Robert cormier has foreshadow do the reader doesn't get bored in sometimes long but necessary chapters.

The author also creates suspense and foreshadowing in the prologue when Dave says “ And ten minutes later Lulu was dead.” He has a suspenseful ending when Denny jumps into the car and Dave is diving Luu is in the back yelling for him to drive.
