In Shakespeare’s a Midsummer Night’s Dream the characters are very similar to how people are in real life; the audience has to observe and infer on who they are, it is not simply stated. This play will take the reader through many loops and jumps around love stories through a series of comedic events. “”The title suggests an atmosphere of fantasy, whimsy, and imagination, which is a pretty accurate description of the magical wood where characters experience events that seem more like a dream than reality.””” Shakespeare has a unique way of leaving the audience with the feeling of uncertainty; it becomes difficult to tell whether one is experiencing reality or an illusion. One of the most underlying and important themes of this play is the difficulties of love. Shakespeare touches on the fact that people fall in love with things that are beautiful to them; and will repeal things that are not. The attraction and draw to beauty might display a side of love at its most intense stage, but one of the main ideas in this play is that true love must surpass the mere external physical shell. A majority of the issues in this play arise from difficulties in romantic world, although it is not fully based on a love story. Demetrius and Lysander are both equally in love with Hermia, but she is only in love with Lysander. Helena loves Demetrius but he does not love her back. This then leads to having an imbalance of love; one women has no man to love her while the other has too many. Also, the developed and balanced love shared between Theseus and Hippolyte displays contrast when compared to the relationship of Oberon and Titania, whose love is a quarrel and leaves the world around them in shambles. A Midsummer Night’s Dream claims that marriage shows the true and utter fulfillment of romantic love. Shakespeare has a way of pulling the audience out of the emotional aspects of this play and instead uses the characters to poke fun at the agony and annoyances of those who are in love. The audience will battle with ideas of how true love will triumph and succeed bringing joy and happiness but also that this may be a case of premature and whimsical love because of the characters
