In other words, Mexican did not choose to migrate to the United States. Instead they were forced to migrate to the United States looking for those opportunities that their government failed to provide them. By sharing the story of Gilbert Martinez, the author is saying that there is a deep history and factors that have led to migration, especially from Mexico and the internal issues, such as governmental repression, the disposal of land and the privatization of the resources have forced Mexican to look for the opportunities that they do not have in their native country. By saying that the war limited them with the food supply, he is arguing that they were prepared to die because Mexican were placed in the wrong side, which means that Mexicans did not have control of their options and destiny.
