Imagine you just get home and there’s a letter in your mail from the government, the letter was asking for all your information because they wanted to draft you for the war. Most people wouldn’t be happy with getting a letter from the government saying that they had to go off and fight in the war and not having a decision.
The draft is mainly held so they can have help in the war and so they can have a better chance of winning the war. The nation’s first military draft began in 1940, when President Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act. The Draft continued through war and peacetime until 1973. More than 10 million men and women were drafted to fight in a war, and a lot died during the time of the war too. Although you might think all of New York must have been a part of it to be that bad it was mainly white working people that were involved in the draft.
