Miniscule Moments

When it comes to leadership experiences, it can be different for everyone. Some may highlight their biggest leadership experience, while others choose to highlight the miniscule moments. Being a leader is a person who leads by doing, just as we learn in 4-H. A person can lead by doing in a large and small setting. I choose to highlight the miniscule moments, as I feel it has impacted others the most. For the past four summers I have served as a cabin counselor for 7th-9th grade girls for areas 4-H Summer Camp. Camp is only five days long, but I am able to witness shy girls turn into confident young leaders by the end of the week. Although camp counselors do not get a lot of credit for what they do, they do impact others around them. Campers …show more content…
Whether it is designing a group game with a few counselors because it started to rain and you need to occupy 100 campers in 15 minutes, or improving the way the camp staff works together; it is important to know how to design and improve systems. Decision-making cannot be more important than it is when you have multiple sets of eyes watching you at all times during camp. Campers, other counselors, adult volunteers, staff, and naturalists are always watching. As a counselor, I strive to do my best at all times. Also, it is important your decision-making is always for the betterment of everyone. The campers feed off of you, hence why you are put in this leadership experience. For example, I hold nightly reflections as a way for my campers to settle down and reflect upon the day. Problem solving is another important skill set a leader has. Problem solving can range from designing a quick backup plan because you arrive to an activity early, to making the best out of something you didn't expect to happen. The campers pick up on your problem solving and how you adapt to the situation; therefore, you must make the best better, just as we are taught in 4-H. Finally, self management is crucial when serving in a leadership position. As a counselor you not only have to take care of yourself, but also ten others. They are your responsibility. It is very important to be ontime to activities to portray to your campers that they need to be ontime too. Campers are like sponges; they stick and learn from

For the past two years, I was a Leader in Training at Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco’s Camp Mendocino. During my experience there, I have discovered the significance of leadership within communities and in society as a whole, whether it is instilling inspiration or setting the pathway for others to achieve their full potential. My responsibility at Camp Mendocino revolved around my ability to guide and encourage youth to participate in various activities and develop their own personal character. As an illustration, one of the youths I have worked with was reserved and quiet. To enumerate, he was not the person to take the first initiative.…

If you ask a group of people if they think they have the great qualities of leadership, many people will not raise their hand. I believe we as people have made leadership as something bigger than us. We’ve made leadership about changing the world. We think it makes us cocky or conceited to even think that we are a good leader. Leadership is more about the small, nice little things you’ve done for someone and how much it affected that person.…

One leadership role I have assumed since entering high school is the Senior Patrol Leader of the Oak Grove Boy Scout Troop 266. The objective of the Boy Scouts of America, as an organization, is to develop the future leaders of the United States through an inexpensive, boy-lead program, available to all boys in the United states, under the age of eighteen. When coming up through the ranks of Boy Scouts, a young man will receive leadership and guidance from his more seasoned scouters. After gaining the valuable lessons offered by the curriculum in the Boy Scout handbook, a young man learns the most important lesson of all: leadership. In a scouter’s career, he will be asked to step up his current position to a role in the troop that benefits…

Leadership is setting the example for others to follow, being able to follow others no matter what their rank, having professional knowledge and taking care of your people. You must be willing to set the example even when you think no one is looking; because there is always someone watching you whether you know it or not. One of my biggest leadership influences during my career was Senior Chief Brian Dumas. He was the consummate professional, he treated everyone with respect and dignity and he cared deeply for everyone at the unit. Senior Chief Dumas would take time out of his day to mentor junior members and show them the correct way to do a job if training was needed.…

One of my leadership experiences would be mentoring young people to set a goal in life. Setting a goal to the young people I mentor, benefited themselves. These young people were in eighth grade and I taught them that in high school, you need to have a goal in their lives because they needed to look forward to something. The best part about mentoring these eighth graders were seeing their face expressions. Another leadership experience was leading my volleyball team to the championship round on our first year.…

RYLA is focused on a Rotary-Centered lifestyle in teenagers and it is so much more than a camp for various reasons. The first reason is the role it played in my year as a camper. I was going through the darkest time of my life before RYLA, and I was in the midst of attempting to redefine myself. It helped me take what I loved, define it as my passion, taught me communication, and make me the leader and person I am. The next reason is the things that it taught me as a CIT.…

My leadership style assessment results were 8 (high) – concern for people and 4 (low) – concern for task. According to the assessment; task-orientation is concerned with getting the job done, while people-orientation focuses on group interactions and the needs of the individual members. The best leaders are ones that can balance their task / people orientation, which would equate a high score for both categories. My rating according to the assessment indicates that I’m overly laissez-faire.…

I am a senior this year, but this is only my second year in 4-H. Even though I have only been in 4-H for a couple years, I have learned a lot of life lessons. Many young members do not know the lessons they are learning as they grow up, but by the time they are my age they will understand it. Although 4-H is time consuming, it is teaching three very important lessons; hard work, time management/deadlines, and leadership. We hear people stress how important these three things are, but nobody ever teaches you how to do them. The reason behind that is that you have to teach yourself these through the activities you do.…
