The Film Missing directed by Costa- Gavras is a profoundly eye-opening cinematic piece that divulges into the subject of political corruption. The film beautifully depicted the severity and effects of political corruption on a nation. The film Missing directed by Costa- Gavras is a political thriller set in in Latin America in the midst of a terrible political and economic crisis. The film tells the story of Charles Horman, an American journalist who mysteriously disappeared one night. As journalist working during the 1973 Chilean coup d'état, Horman (John Shea) discovered insider intel and information which endangered his life. Costa-Gavras based this film on the tragic story of American journalist documentary filmmaker, Charles Horman. Horman was an enthusiastic supporter of President Salvador Allende. Charles was visiting a coastal town in Chile at the time during the midst of the chaotic political corruption. On September 17th Charles Horman was abducted from his home by Chilean Soldiers. Days after Charles Horman’s abduction his wife, Joyce Horman and father, Ed Horman desperately searched Chile in hopes of finding him. They contacted the American Officials to aid them on their search but no progress was made. The search for Charles became exhausting and no real progress was ever made. The US officials bombarded the two with tedious questions, which lead Joyce and Ed to live in a constant state of anxiety. A month has passed and still no sign of Charles, that’s when Joyce and Ed sought out help from Ford Foundation. With help from the Ford Foundation it was discovered that Charles Horman was executed, he was shot and buried in the wall of the national stadium. Charles was executed because he had acquired too much insider intel and information which would have been detrimental if ever leaked. After discovering the death of Charles, the family filed a lawsuit against Henry Kissinger in 1976. The lawsuit was dismissed in
