First, I like to inform you this summer I have been shadowing an internal medicine at her private practice and a gastroenterologist physician at a community clinic – observing their patient interactions and diagnostic procedures. I also have been shadowing a radiation oncologist at the LB hospital, and have visited the RC to learn first-hand about different cancer diagnostic and therapeutic services. I arrived in Canada as a refugee without my family. I had little understanding of the English language and the culture when I began volunteering at the Mission Viejo hospital. For the following four years, my experiences at the hospital helped me build my identity and guided my ambitions. I remember one particular Sunday; I greeted a family of three arriving at the ED, the child told me her pregnant mother was experiencing intense pain. I discovered the patient was afraid to seek prenatal care since she was an undocumented immigrant; her condition had worsened and she needed to be immediately hospitalized for an induced labor. While sadly this was not the last instance of such, my time at the hospital complemented my own experience and fostered my understanding of socio-economical barriers on individuals’ health. I aspire to continue my engagement in community-based care services through medical school – if I am to become an effective physician, I must learn first-hand about the health concerns of local populations.
