As a student that has had a job for a few years, I can testify that a great deal of the best motivators does not come from negative reinforcement or healthy hygiene factors; rather, they come from the intrinsic motivators that I create. When a manager praises or gives myself more of the feeling of responsibility, I feel the need to work harder in order to please my boss. Whether my manager was poor at their job or fit for their line of work I would still use that little bit of encouragement can motivate myself to do well or to prove that I can handle the job. I believe that this article proposes extremely true statements that real life employees actually deal with.
I agree completely with Herzberg's ideas and statistics on the role hygiene factors take in motivating workers. Numerous people when starting a new job have a high expectation when it comes to hygiene factors such as salary, security, and also better work conditions. When these conditions are not met to an extent, this accomplishes the opposite of motivating employees. Even when these conditions are met, this achieves extraordinarily little to motivate employees since they come in with that mindset of sound hygiene
