Muscles Involved In PFPS

Decent Essays
Muscles involved in PFPS consist of overall hip and leg muscles, mainly the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis.
Tendons involved comprise of tendons and ligaments that surround and stabilise the knee with emphasis on the quadriceps tendon, patella tendon, patella retinaculum and iliotibial band.
Bones involved start from the hip till the feet with emphasis on the patella, femur, tibia and patellofemoral joint, which encompasses the trochlear groove and femoral condyles.

It is the largest part of the thigh. The fibres run in a 12-15 degrees lateral direction to the Femur. If it has extreme tightness, it can cause real pain and discomfort because it may push the Patella out of place. Vastus Intermedialis: its Fibers run nearly in a directly vertical line and contribute to the full extension of the knee. Due to this, it is the hardest muscle out of the four to extend even further after the knee is fully extended, it cannot be further stretched by hip extension.…

The tibiofemoral joint adds angle and assists with knee extension. The patellar ligament is inferior to the patella and located on the anterior surface of the tibial tuberosity. The tibial collateral ligament attaches to the medial meniscus and the fibular collateral ligament attaches to the lateral meniscus allowing them to both flex and extend. The posterior cruciate ligament and anterior cruciate ligament are limited by anterior and posterior translation. The lateral and medial meniscus are shock absorbers and stabilizers that absorb 40% of our body weight (Drake, Mitchell, & Vogl, 2012).…

The muscles that are relaxed during the movement of the trunk flexion are longissimus, illiocostalis, multifidi, rotatores, semispinalis capitis, spinalis, interspinalis, and intertransversarii. Multifidi, rotatores, semispinalis capitis, interspinalis, and intertransversarii were mentioned earlier in this analysis.…

The structure most likely injured with the direct blow of the tibial tuberosity resulting in presentation of the lower limb (figure 1) would be the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). The presented picture shows the tibia being pushed back posteriorly. The PCL, within the knee joint, prevents posterior translation of the tibia bone related to the femur bone (Moore et., al, 2014). If the PCL is torn, then the tibia can move backward too much leading to instability of the knee. The knee joint serves as a hinge joint that connects the femur to the tibia allowing for flexion, extension, and minimal internal/external rotation.…

For example, shod running is associated with an increased peak torque at each of the three lower extremity joints when compared to minimal or barefoot running. The most prominent increases occur at the hip and knee joints. More importantly, disproportionately large increases in the hip internal rotation torque and in the knee flexion and knee varus torques. An increase in the three joints showed weak correlations with increase stride length observed in shod runners, but an increase in the external knee varus torque was found to significantly correlate with the increase in stride length. This was found to only explain 8% of the variance in the increase while shod running (Kerrigan, Franz, Keenan, Dicharry, Della Croce, & Wilder, 2009).…

The prime function of the hamstring muscle complex is to contract eccentrically, thereby absorbing kinetic energy so as to protect the knee and hip joints (REF). However, due to repetitive hip extension and knee flexion movements during match play, causes periods of rapid acceleration-deceleration forces on the muscle fibres, by placing the muscle in a lengthened state over two joints and contracting forcefully (Askling et al., 2006). When the hamstring muscle is strained, the initial injury is usually associated with disruption of the distal myotendinous junction and muscle fibres (REF). Injuries to the muscle belly only occur with the application of high forces (REF). This develops because the tension contributed by stretch is superimposed and impairs the muscles ability to absorb force between the fibrils, causing interfibrillar shear failure (Dadebo et al., 2004).…

The body’s systems such as the, digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory and circulatory, must work together to meet the demands placed upon the runner’s body. Firstly, the process of the digestive system can be broken down into four sections, ingestion, digestion, absorption and assimilation (Toole, Toole and Toole, 1999).…

Almost every muscle in the preparatory phase is finally being used and put to action. This is usually characterized by near-maximal concentric activity in the involved muscles (Floyd, 2012, p. 207). During this phase the shooter will jump off their feet contracting their quadriceps using their hamstring muscles. The gastrocnemius, soleus, Achilles tendon, peroneus longus, peroneus brevis, tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus and the flexor halluces longus musles will act in plantar flexion making the shooter able to jump of the ground. The muscles being used to cause extension of the hip and knee are the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius and the vastus medialis.…
