My Academic Literacy Skills

Considering I have been a university student on and off for the last decade, I believe I have become complacent about my academic literacy skills. I earn good grades, in my opinion, and I often receive positive feedback on my academic writing style and my referencing. Whilst I have received some criticisms, it has never occurred to me to analyse my academic literacy skills and make a point of identifying my weaknesses and improving upon them. As my degree progresses, I increasingly need to be able to express myself confidently and clearly and I cannot do that sufficiently until I have refined my writing skills (Grellier & Goerke, 2014, p. 159). Using online proofreading tools was a useful way for me to identify the deficits in my writing style …show more content…
It would be beneficial for me to start using timetables and plans for all academic work, to allocate enough time for each task required. I hope that increased time spent planning and editing will allow me to avoid using, or identify and correct, redundant expressions, adverbs and nominalisation as well as ensure I am using a broad, discipline-specific vocabulary. A framework that I will use as a planning scaffold in future academic work is the PROCESS acronym; planning, referencing, organisation of ideas, composition of ideas, engineering of the essay, spelling and structure (Chenery-Morris, 2008, p. 59). I will endeavour to make better use of proofreading services such as the Paper Rater website, which I found to be the most comprehensive and insightful proofreading tool (http://www.paperrater.com). The Smarthinking service offered by Open University would also be beneficial, and the use of the service will rely upon my plan to implement a timetable for academic work, as time needs to be allocated for the submitted piece to be assessed and returned (http://services.smarthinking.com). Improving my academic literacy skills will not only be beneficial to my academic work but will also show consideration to the reader, which is important (Grellier et al., 2014, p. 172;). Hopefully by allocating more time to my academic work and making better use of proofreading services, I can improve the weaknesses currently found in my academic literacy

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

Entering higher education requires students to adapt to new forms of “understanding, knowing, organizing, and interpreting information.” As part of Student Writing in Higher Education: An Academic Literacies Approach, Lea and Street have proven in their writing that academic research in student writing has fallen into three main categories which affect the grading process of students. The “study skills” approach states that all writing is a set of skills that can be transferred to any writing context. These skills are necessary in the writing process, and is taught to everyone from a young age. “Study skills” focuses on fixing the “problems” with the students ' ' writing and learning.…

Proofreading and outside review of my writing assignments are essential to producing scholarly writing skills. However, the outside review offers more insight into the areas of concern. Having someone else review my work is how I perfect my writing. Even after relentlessly searching for my own mistakes, I will still miss some. But with the assistance of outside review, I am sure that I am developing an essay that is up to college level writing.…

I cannot remember a moment of my life where theatre has not been important for me. Being involved from a young age, I was destined to be on stage. It was not until I entered high school when I realized how difficult theatre can be; actors cannot go on stage without understanding the play, designers cannot outline anything without the proper information, and a director cannot direct without a grasp on the themes and ideas of the show. It all comes down to the research for the production. Without this literacy practice of research, no one can put on the literacy event of a performance.…

To become skilled at proofreading, an unskilled writer needs plenty of practice. Some suggest students take the time to proofread their writing repeatedly looking for a specific error within the writing. Impressive as this idea is, most students only read through their writing a few times. As students become skilled writers less errors will be made when writing and proofreading will consume less time. When students learn to ask themselves, questions regarding sentence structure and proper spelling as they write, they are more likely to write sentences correctly the first time.…

Writing does not come easily to everyone. No one starts out writing perfect essays, and everyone has areas where they need improvement. It takes many different skills, time, and a lot of revision. High school writing is much different from college writing, and with the help from the article “What Is Academic Writing?” by L. Lennie Irvin and chapter one in “From Inquiry to Academic Writing” it is easier to understand what academic writing is about and how it works.…

Written language is a trait known to be only possessed by mankind. Although other species may have audible forms of communication, man is able to record and document his thoughts, feelings, or events that have unfolded in a way that can be viewed multiple times without him having to use his voice over and over. Literacy is a skill that adults in the United States are expected to have; but the level of your literacy says a lot about you and can have a tremendous impact on what career you end up in. For this reason, this college English class is a requirement for all those seeking a degree. Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…

Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
