My Black Belt

I never realized how important earning my black belt was. That is, until October of last year. Let me take you back a little bit. My journey began in October of 2013 when my dad signed my brother, sister and I up for classes. I don't exactly remember my first class, but I remember how sore I was afterward. My Mom set me up the most awesome bubble bath ever. I took a lot of bubble baths during that first year. I slowly started to enjoy things like the adrenaline rush when sparring, but my overall favorite thing is self-defense. I also began to appreciate the graceful, but still powerful, aesthetic value of forms. Flash forward to October 2016. My sister and I were struggling a bit with the rigors of black belt boot camp, but through a lot of extra work, we made the final cut. It was at that same time that my sister injured herself and though she kept pushing, it became apparent that she was not going to be able to go through with the test. I had this choice to make - go ahead and take the test without her, or withdraw and this be a milestone we completed together. Since I am here today, you know what my choice was. As soon as my parents told Sensei our decision a flood of emotions came over me. I realized that I had been working for three years for this moment and it was a moment I earned. I cried a lot . …show more content…

This time I was going for my first belt test. I looked towards the center, there sat 6 judges, each with a pencil and paper. In an attempt to remember everything I learned in class I began to run through the combinations in my mind; punch, punch, duck, wait or was it duck, punch, punch. I sat there waiting for my turn fearful that I was going to mess up. As I grew more anxious the other combinations seemed to mix together.…

Have you ever felt that all the hardwork you have put into something has been worthless? This is the exact feeling I felt when I lost my varsity spot for the 138 pound weight class on my high school wrestling team. The previous year as a freshman I had been very successful making it to state and helping my team win the state championship, but I was a 106 pounder, the lowest weight class. Over the summer I gained nearly thirty pounds, and I was now wrestling at the 138 pound weight class. I wasn't use to the weight.…

Prior to beginning the masters of occupational therapy program it was as if I was an ancient wanderer in the dark ages, eager to learn new ideas and discover new places not sure what the world would throw at me next. Over the next eight years I found myself at a series of personal crossroads one encounters during life’s journey. Not the crossroad where one sells their soul to the devil for some magical power. It was more of one of those forks in the road, a kin to the Robert Frost Poem, where one path leads to life A and the other leads to life B. Crossroads that impacted my future, shaped who I am and my character, influenced life changes, which led to a transition that will influence me and my family for generations to come. I come from…

I would say that achieving the level of black belt is liberating in a way, because not only is it a regression to the basics, it removes the material aspect of the game. Learning karate transcends from a race to the next colour, to an intimate experience of the self. This is something I experienced when I got my black belt three years ago. I feel like at that point, learning Kata was not a step towards getting my next belt; it was learning kata for the sake of learning it. Rather than extrinsically enjoying learning, which involves enjoying the end goal of an action, it became intrinsic enjoyment, which is the enjoyment of the action…
