Summer softball took the best girls in the town league and put them on two ‘equal’ teams to play against other teams in the area. In my opinion the teams were never equal and I was always on the better team. Like in basketball this team dominated the competition. We weren’t as successful as we were in basketball, but we still did win our fair share of games and championships. I still had aspirations of playing at a higher level, but my confidence was completely shaken when I did not make varsity basketball as a freshman. There were four freshman who had been invited to play fall ball with the varsity team from the year before and I was the only one who did not make varsity. I was pulled aside by the coach who told me he just felt I needed a little bit more time to develop. I was furious and I wanted to prove him wrong. After the first scrimmage of the season about a week after I learned I was on JV, the coach called me to the front of the bus on the way home and told me that I would now be practicing with varsity on Sunday’s as well as Saturday’s with the JV team. For about half of the season I would play half of the JV game and play half of the varsity game as well as practice with both teams. Ironically I wasn’t officially just on the varsity squad until the day my grandmother died. It was ironic because my grandmother had died in the morning, but my mom wanted me to go to school since we had a game that day so she didn’t tell me until I got home from school. I was getting on the bus to play our biggest rival when my coach told me I wouldn’t be playing with the JV team that night or the rest of the season. It was the worst day of my life and here I am finally playing in
