My Family: What Is Cultural Identity?

Decent Essays
When we first started this section the question was, what is cultural identity? We now know that cultural identity is what makes a person who they are, which can be related to their nationality, religion, generation, or any kind of social group that has its own culture. But the new question is, what is my cultural identity? I believe the things that make me who I am are my family, my faith, and my friends.

My family is a big part of my cultural identity because they are the ones that taught me how to be the person I am today. I was born into a big, loving family. I have my parents who taught me how to be respectful to the people around me. I have two older half siblings, a brother named Blake and a sister named Blair, who I’ve grown up

A couple months after I was born, my brother and I were baptised into the Catholic church. My parents decided that it would be good for me to get educated at a Catholic school, so when I was three I started pre-school at Saint Mary’s. I attended that school until the end of my eighth grade year, which allowed me to learn about my faith and to grow into the person I am today. Since moving up from Saint Mary’s School to Hoquiam High School, I still try to attend church every Sunday and I teach third graders Sunday school in my parish. This is why my faith makes up a big part of my cultural identity.

The last big part of my cultural identity is my best friends who have been there for me through everything. I have a couple of friends that it would be impossible to live without. Many of my friends I have known since I was in elementary school or younger, who are the people I grew up with. They know more about me than anyone else. They know what I like to do, what I like to eat, and how I spend my free time. They also know how to pick me up when I am feeling down and they can make me laugh in any situation. These are the people that I love to spend time with and I always look forward

When anyone asks me what my culture identity is, the first thing to pop into my head is everything I am surrounded by and the closest people to me, also the activities I do on the daily and how it is done. Culture is something that is shared and learned as you grow up. What you learned is partially who you end up being in the future whether you can identify it or not. I define my culture identity as the things I am closest to and who I am closest to, which happens to be Jehovah God, his word the bible, and my family and closest friends.…

Place with a Memory Just like everyone in the United States of America, excluding Native Americans, I’m an immigrant and/or come from immigrant descendants. This means everyone has a race or ethnic group from which they descend from, and they may or may not follow the cultural aspects of their kin. For me, I am an immigrant who moved to the United States from Pakistan at the age of two (2002), so while my parents grew up with a great deal of culture and tradition, I did not; I only have what they attempted to affix on me. Being a first-generation immigrant, I grew up with all of my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents directly on the opposite side of the world from me, so to me my real family was only between me, my mom, my dad, and…
