One must pass through 3 different levels of initiation before one can be called a Santero or a priest in the religion. To many it is a cult of animal sacrificing and devil worshipping, as my dad explained to me this is what he would do. Generally in Santeria, wearing white signifies a special state. Either that possession is expected, the person has been specially cleansed or blessed, or that they were recently initiated. Growing up, my dad went from normal to uncanny. Having him at school events, you would just hear everyone talking “ who is that guy in all white?”. I would not want to claim him as my father, it was embarrassing to myself and my mother. My father did however care for me and my sister, although when he had a significant other in his life, with children, it was as if me and my sister did not exist in his world. He would not call, nor text, we would receive no letter on our birthdays or special holidays. When in school, we would have these “father daughter dances”, due to my fathers absent in my life, I would never be able to attend. I would constantly hear girls stating what they did with their dads and it would make me heartbroken knowing I could never do these types of things with mine. My sister was lucky considering we had our uncle, my uncle would take her to the “father daughter dance” or I would take her out on little dates to show her my love and attention.
