Every person has a certain characteristic that makes them stand out from everyone else. Some people eat pizza with a fork, some people think moon Nazis are going to invade America, and others can’t sleep at night without a blanket; we all have a quirk that make us unique. My personal quirk is I love getting tattoos, although I hate the feeling of a needle going in and out of my skin. After getting a new tattoo, I am always in awe of the lasting piece of art I get to wear on my body. I got my first tattoo when I was seventeen, and since then I have gotten five additional ones. Tattoos are an addiction and because I have so many people get to see what I’m interested in, and that I have money.

Ever since his death I have wanted to get a tattoo to honor his life. Due to the age restrictions in Florida I was unable to get a tattoo without parental consent, however when I was seventeen my dad finally agreed and allowed me to get one. The tattoo I chose was drawn out by a close friend, he created a Jesus fish, because my grandpa loved fishing and inside were his initials followed by his date of birth and death. I decided to get the tattoo on my chest; this would become a common trend for me due to the army’s strict regulations on visible tattoos. Thirty painful minutes later and it was finished. I was elated I had my first tattoo and that it would honor my grandpa so much. A few months later I turned eighteen and was able to go to the shop by my own. This time, I wanted something that would either be religious or patriotic. I was raised on both the bible and patriotism, because of that I ended up getting the phrase “in God we trust” on my left shoulder. Once again, I was happy with what I got but then I realized something, I had a tattoo on the left side of my chest and nothing to balance it out on the right. So naturally I needed to get another one. Around October, I

Tattoos and Piercings Bias Tattoos and piercings have become more and more popular fashion statements as artists continue to create new ideas, as well as the acceptance of the ink and jewelry. Although it may seem that there is an approval towards this style, many are put into stereotypical categories based on their appearance. Regardless of who the person truly is, the bias associated with tattoos and piercings often leads him/her to be percieved as less intelligent, fraudulent, and less spiritual.…

There is a famous saying by unknown author that says, “sometimes the nicest people you meet are covered in tattoos and sometimes the most judgmental people you meet go to church on Sundays,” this quote helps to examine how looks doesn’t matter but action does. Having tattoos shouldn’t be considered against social norms and value because tattoo should be looked as freedom of speech or of expression. In Ronald P. White’s article “The Art, the First Amendment and the Courts” helps demonstrates how tattoos and the art of tattooing are forms of pure expression fully protected by the 1st Amendment which helps protects freedom of speech. People get tattoos to tell one’s story to the world through a visual representation of an important moment, person…

Prior to the mid 2000’s, tattoos were viewed as self-mutilation and simply unnecessary. During the 1940’s, tattoos began to be a much more common accessory, especially among military men. Their reasoning behind obtaining these tattoos was to show off their pride towards their country. Most of these 1940’s style tattoos revolve around eagles, the American flag, and other strong American symbols. Older generations viewed these people with tattoos as simply being bad people.…

It’s no secret that many people get memorial tattoos to honor the deceased. For many, it is a way of carrying that special person(s) around with them. These are not normal tattoos since they usually have much thought placed into creating them. I have heard many stories of people that get tattoos commemorating their marriage but then they get an unforeseen divorce. Some people also get tattoos that they regret when they reach a certain age.…

I have a multitude of favorite one-liners, song lyrics, and quotes that I recite on a daily basis that have stuck with me because of their humor and the way I can relate to them. However, these favorite words do not need to be tattooed on one’s body, as these favorites can change so easily. My favorite quote is not currently the same as my favorite quote at age eight, and my favorite quote will be different in twenty years. That is the beauty of being human and gaining new experience. Jamison also details the fact that she “...found [herself] explaining the tattoo to a parade of strangers and acquaintances” (Jamison 458).…

Shenanigans Tattoo: A Refreshing Twist of a Tattoo Parlor Like others, I had a complete mock up of what I thought a tattoo parlor would be envisioned in my mind. Provocative art work would cover every inch of the walls, floors concealed with dirt, and unsanitary couches as well as chipped paint that looked like it had been there since the dawn of time. I was reluctant, to say the least, that I could be wrong about this stereotype as well as the stereotypes that follow the men and women that work in tattoo shops. Luckily for me, Shenanigans Tattoo was something out of the ordinary. It exhibited all the qualities of a tattoo parlor but took on a whole new light that made the shop shine.…

During fifth grade I had the toughest time fitting in, loving myself, and dealing with family problems. People would beat me down with abusive words. Classmates would always call me names and put me down, sometimes even physically push me around. Life was not at all peachy. There was this one day where I reached a breaking point and decided to put a temporary purple smiley face tattoo onto my left wrist, as a reminder that I will be okay.…

My tattoo is to show the love I had for my grandpa who was always there for me but can’t be anymore. With everything he did for me he taught me to treat everyone the same, to worm a hook, what plants to stay away from, and how to find north from moss so I could get back to camp when I was in the wood. Just having this tattoo on me makes me feel he is closer to me and that he is still with me watching over…

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary a tattoo is defined as “an indelible mark or figure fixed upon the body by insertion of pigment under the skin or by production of scars.” Tattooing and body modification has been practice dating back to Eurasian Neolithic farmers in 4000 BC, thought to be a healing remedy based on the particular placement on the arms, legs and throughout the body consisting of various dots and lines. In today’s culture, the idea of getting a tattoo has shifted from the healing benefits to primitive symbols depicting a story or to simply add a unique detail to ones skin. “A tattoo is more then a painting on skin; its meaning and reverberations cannot be comprehended without a knowledge of the history and mythology…
